One River

Explorations and Discoveries in the Amazon Rain Forest

Review:

I first came across Wade Davis while watching Richler Ink on Book Television. The host Daniel Richler was interviewing author Wade Davis on his new book ”One River”. Davis recounted stories of how both he and fellow student Tim Plowman had traveled the Amazon Rain Forest. They were performing Botanical research while retracing many of the routes of their Professor and mentor, Richard Schultes who had traveled the Amazon some decades before in search of botanical treasures.

I was captivated by the stories Davis told of how the natives had a connection and understanding of the environment beyond that of western scientific knowledge. The natives knowledge of the local flora was so great that they would, at times, become puzzled with the Botanist queries and in return question their knowledge of Botany. The book is a stunning account of adventure into the treasures of the Amazon and also provides a history of how western religion and governments has left a trail of betrayal and destruction.

Rating: 9/10
